Construction of Vent Plant at Jackson Avenue Judlau Contracting, Inc is the general contractor for this $56.85 million project, which involves the construction of a new fan plant at Jackson Avenue in Long Island City, NY. The plant will serve the IND Queens Boulevard Line in the Borough of Queens. This project will allow the affected sections of the subway to meet the current fire protection standards. The project involves the consolidation of two existing plants into one larger facility and the decommissioning of a third facility. The structural work includes the construction a new fan chamber in the tunnel between Court Square Station and Queens Plaza Station, repairing, replacing and reinforcing existing structural steel, as well as building a new traffic median on Jackson Avenue. Work will also include the installation of new stainless steel dampers and operators, as well as control and communication equipment, which will allow remote control of the plant from the RCC. Judlau Contracting will also construct a plenum from Jackson Avenue to Hunter Street, which will provide air flow to and from the R line tunnel. Judlau received the award for this 26-month project on June 15, 2009. The project is currently on schedule. The contract is 100% funded by the FTA through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.
